Simon Willison's Weblog reports that an email from Sam Altman to OpenAI's board, dated October 2022 and now exposed in the Musk versus Altman lawsuit, reveals the company's strategic thinking around open-source models. Altman wrote that OpenAI wanted to create a language model with capabilities comparable to GPT-3 that could run on consumer hardware, and release it before competitors like Stability. The goal, according to the email, was to discourage others from releasing similarly powerful models and make it harder for new AI efforts to secure funding.
