Australia spent more than $9m for each asylum seeker held on Nauru last year – so why can’t they afford to buy food?

The Guardian reports on more than one hundred asylum seekers detained on Nauru who say they cannot afford sufficient food or clean drinking water, despite Australia spending more than nine million dollars per person on their detention. A survey by the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre found that many are skipping meals to survive. These individuals are waiting indefinitely for their asylum claims to be processed.
