Solar tower power plants get a data boost

Researchers from Germany's Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the German Aerospace Center have created PAINT, a freely accessible database of operational data from a concentrating solar power tower near Jülich. The database contains eight hundred forty-nine gigabytes of information, including precise positions of two thousand fourteen mirrors, weather records from twenty twenty-one to twenty twenty-four, and over two hundred thousand images. Physics World reports the team aims to help other researchers develop virtual replicas of these plants and use machine learning to improve efficiency and reduce costs. The researchers hope that future contributions from other solar tower facilities worldwide will establish a common industry standard for the field.
