Ecowas appoints Senegal's Birame Diop to drive regional reforms

West African leaders have appointed General Birame Diop of Senegal to lead the Economic Community of West African States, positioning a military figure with extensive UN peacekeeping experience at the helm of the bloc. Per RFI English, Diop previously served as Senegal's defence minister. The appointment comes as ECOWAS works to recover from recent departures by three member states.
