Cheap handheld fans, now stacked at supermarket checkouts for under ten pounds, are piling up as a growing environmental problem. These devices contain surprising complexity—plastic housings, copper wiring, rare-earth magnets, circuit boards, and rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Mining and processing those materials requires substantial energy and water. Research suggests more than eight million handheld fans will be purchased in the UK this year, with sales expected to reach nearly ten million by 2030 if current trends hold. The challenge: nearly half are discarded annually, meaning around one point eight million fans will end up in household rubbish bins this year alone. These fans are engineered to be cheaper to replace than to repair—batteries are glued in place, spare parts are unavailable, and opening them risks damage. As the Conversation reports, the real problem isn't that these fans are inexpensive, but that manufacturers seem to be competing on disposability rather than durability, layering on unnecessary features like digital screens while making repair nearly impossible. The upside: Europe's right-to-repair regulations are pushing manufacturers toward designing for longevity, and the UK is considering similar reforms.
