The rise of Yemeni coffeehouses in Dearborn and beyond

Dearborn, Michigan recently declared itself the coffee capital of America — and it's a title earned through an unexpected entrepreneurial surge. Three Yemeni American businesses have expanded to more than one hundred twenty-one locations across fourteen states, bringing traditional Yemeni coffee and culture to American consumers. The Conversation reports that these contemporary coffeehouses represent a revival of Yemen's centuries-old coffee heritage. Today's versions welcome everyone, serve no alcohol to keep the spaces halal, and have become gathering places in their communities. Two of the founders, Mokhtar Alkhanshali and Ibrahim Alhasbani, come from families with generations of coffee farming back home. They launched their empires during Yemen's ongoing civil war, transforming personal heritage into spaces where Americans can experience the history and culture of Yemen through a cup of coffee.
