Jeffries downplays clash with Mamdani over New York primaries

politics

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is downplaying his very public disagreement with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani over congressional primaries, according to Axios. The two are backing opposing candidates in at least two New York races. In one, Jeffries supports incumbent Representative Dan Goldman against progressive challenger Brad Lander, who has Mamdani's endorsement. In another, Jeffries backs Congressman Adriano Espaillat while Mamdani supports his challenger, Darializa Avila Chevalier. When asked about the tension, Jeffries told reporters that a couple of primary outcomes won't reshape the Democratic Party's direction. He said he simply follows the custom of supporting incumbent House Democrats for reelection. Jeffries and Mamdani, he argued, have simply agreed to strongly disagree. But Jeffries' subtle jab suggests the real fault line is ideological. He noted that one contested race is in the nation's most gentrified district—an apparent criticism of democratic socialist strength among wealthy, educated transplants. On the surface, it looks like standard party politics. Beneath it: a battle for the soul of New York Democrats.
