When SpaceX landed a Falcon 9 first stage for the first time in twenty fifteen, they solved a problem engineers had chased for seventy years: bringing a rocket down safely without destroying it. They've now pulled it off nearly six hundred times, and Hackaday reports the achievement reveals an odd truth—getting a rocket to orbit is straightforward compared to bringing one back down in one piece. The hard part isn't launch; it's landing. A rocket can descend under parachutes, but ocean splashdown subjects it to violent impact and salt-water corrosion. Landing under its own power on deployable legs is gentler but demands engines that restart and throttle in flight—something rockets were never engineered for—plus extra mass for legs, guidance, and reserve fuel. On the Falcon 9, that reusable hardware cuts maximum payload to low Earth orbit by nearly a quarter. Per Hackaday, China recently recovered a Long March 10B using a giant net, but the larger pattern is clear: every major launch provider now designs for reusability, not as an engineering luxury but as a competitive necessity.
