Russian attack on Odesa kills three after Ukraine targets Moscow with drones overnight – as it happened

The Guardian reports that a Russian attack on the southern Ukrainian city of Odesa has killed three people, coming after Ukraine sent some four hundred drones against Moscow overnight — itself a response to one of the war's largest strikes on Kyiv at the weekend. The exchange has also renewed attacks on civilian shipping in the Black Sea, a corridor that matters well beyond the two countries: Ukraine has accounted for roughly six percent of global wheat exports and about eleven percent of corn, and traders and analysts say it has lost around a third of its capacity to ship grain from its Black Sea ports since the attacks began. Kyiv says it is now briefing the International Maritime Organization and the governments of countries whose citizens were killed or injured, and is pressing for an international monitoring mission at its ports. That mission, the Guardian says, is expected to begin work in the fall, with Ukrainian officials framing it as a way to document the strikes and build a case for accountability.
