Against the AI framing multiverse: Introducing AI StopWatch

Artificial intelligence coverage has become hopelessly fragmented, according to LessWrong — different publications seem to report on the same stories from completely different frames, as if each outlet is covering AI from its own universe with contradictory premises. One day AI is coming for all the jobs; the next, it's a worthless scam. Some outlets say it's safe because it only does what you ask; others say it's dangerous because it will do exactly that. To cut through this chaos, part of the Machine Intelligence Research Institute's communications team launched AI StopWatch in May, a Substack aimed at non-insiders who want coherent AI information without jargon. They publish between two and five stories daily, compile them each evening into a digest, and release audio versions as podcasts. The creator has tracked media framing patterns since January using Claude to analyze roughly thirty-four hundred media artifacts, finding that major news events consistently trigger surges of coverage from specific perspectives while drowning out others.
