Alex Southmayd, a former Teach For America instructor, just launched Bloomy, a Y Combinator-backed AI tutoring platform for K through 12 students. The product tackles Benjamin Bloom's two-sigma problem—the finding that one-on-one tutoring dramatically outpaces conventional classrooms—by diagnosing skill gaps, placing students on personalized learning paths, and deploying an AI tutor powered by Anthropic and OpenAI models to guide them through lessons. Hacker News reports the AI is constrained by design: it coaches students through concepts rather than giving away answers. Students advance only after demonstrating ninety percent mastery. In an early pilot at a Massachusetts charter school with roughly one hundred fifty students in grades six through eight, students showed one point eight times the expected winter-to-spring growth. The platform charges families thirty-nine dollars monthly for English and Writing, with Math launching July thirty-first, and holds zero-data-retention agreements with both model providers to prevent student data from being used for behavioral advertising.
