Earth's orbit is getting crowded. There are already sixteen thousand satellites circling our planet, supporting GPS navigation, weather forecasting, banking, and internet communications. Within this decade, that number could exceed one hundred thousand—and with them come serious challenges around maintenance and collisions. Unlike aircraft, satellites can't be serviced in a shop. They must endure intense radiation, extreme temperature swings, and mechanical stress that gradually wears them out. A NASA satellite's uncontrolled re-entry in March underscored the risk of aging spacecraft. Per The Conversation, researchers are turning to artificial intelligence to help manage this crowded orbital environment. AI systems can detect early signs of satellite degradation—particularly battery wear—from the ground, allowing operators to adjust operations and extend working lives. Some researchers are testing federated learning, where satellites share insights with each other without constantly transmitting data back to Earth, letting entire networks self-monitor. Artificial intelligence won't solve everything—it can't eliminate space debris or prevent every failure. But as Earth orbit grows more crowded, intelligent satellites that can monitor themselves may be crucial to keeping the space services we depend on working safely and reliably.
