Adderall Tolerance: Much More Than You Wanted To Know

LessWrong digs into a surprisingly understudied question: do stimulant medications like Adderall and Ritalin lose effectiveness over time? The evidence cuts both ways. Longer clinical trials show no worse results than shorter ones, suggesting tolerance—if it exists—develops very slowly, possibly over months or years. Swedish prescription data shows doses tend to stabilize rather than climb endlessly. But one landmark study, the MTA trial, found stimulant effects largely vanished after three years. The author surveys the literature and finds it frustratingly thin on this question, but suggests patients and doctors might consider occasional medication breaks to preserve effectiveness.
