Protect Your Privacy with California's DROP Tool
tech
Per EFF Deeplinks, California has launched DROP—the Delete Request and Opt-out Platform—which lets residents request the deletion and non-sale of their personal data from every registered data broker in the state with a single filing. Starting August first, those brokers have forty-five days to honor each request. The tool currently reaches over six hundred registered brokers. Filing a DROP request can reduce unwanted spam, strengthen your cybersecurity by limiting which companies hold your data, and give you greater control over how your information is used. That said, DROP doesn't stop new data collection or affect non-registered companies like Google—it mainly restricts how brokers can use your data after you opt out.
