The Case for Physical AI Safety

According to LessWrong, robot foundation models—systems trained to think and physically act—are becoming reality, with companies raising over eighteen point eight billion dollars to develop them. Yet funding explicitly dedicated to their safety research rounds to zero. To address that gap, researchers announced the launch of the Physical AI Safety Institute, a nonprofit focused on safety techniques for these embodied AI systems.
Why the concern? When an AI system is physically embodied, it gains direct causal access to the world. A misaligned robot doesn't need to convince a human to act on its behalf—it can manipulate objects and environments directly. PAISI aims to build research capacity in interpretability, alignment, and control for robot foundation models, starting with fellowships and a major workshop this summer.
The institute's founders argue the research is important, neglected, and tractable—classical robotics and large language model safety offer promising approaches that could be adapted to this new frontier.
