U.S. to slap 50% tariffs on Canadian goods

The Trump administration is imposing fifty percent tariffs on certain Canadian goods — hockey sticks, wine, and cement among them. The duties cover roughly twenty billion dollars in annual Canadian imports, take effect next month, and mark the first use of a particular trade law provision, Axios reports. The administration accuses Canada of retaliating against earlier U.S. tariffs by removing American liquor from store shelves and enacting auto policies the U.S. views as discriminatory. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the tariffs violate the existing trade agreement and promised to intensify negotiations in the coming weeks.
