Play puts spotlight on Kenya’s crisis of gender-based violence
world
In Kenya, a new play titled Free Me is drawing attention to a rising crisis of gender-based violence. Created by Kenyan theatre and television producer Gathoni Kimuyu, the work is deeply autobiographical, rooted in her own experience of domestic abuse. Through unflinching scenes of intimate partner violence, the production aims to encourage survivors to speak out about their experiences. According to The Guardian, violence against women in Kenya continues to rise. Kimuyu's theatrical work attempts to transform personal trauma into a catalyst for change, breaking the silence around this urgent social crisis.
