Former Met police chief admits surveillance of Stephen Lawrence’s family was institutionally racist

A former head of the Metropolitan Police has acknowledged that the surveillance of Stephen Lawrence's family was institutionally racist. The Guardian (World) reports that Paul Condon, who was commissioner during the nineteen nineties, made the admission on Tuesday to the spycops inquiry, the public investigation into Britain's undercover policing units. Condon said the force failed to properly control the unit, which he described as having committed horrendous abuses. That unit spied on the family while they were pressing Scotland Yard to properly investigate the racist murder of Stephen Lawrence.
