With its third issue, audio magazine Signal Hill is transmitting further than ever

Signal Hill, an audio magazine, just released its third issue, and it's bucking a major trend. Per Nieman Lab, documentary audio has contracted sharply, but Signal Hill is expanding—it's now being broadcast on radio. Launched last year, the magazine is structured like a print publication, with episodes organized by type: dispatch, feature, profile. Stories range widely: a 'Talk of the Town'-style piece from Madrid, New Mexico; a feature on lutes by writer Ruby Tandoh; an essay contrasting the Native American occupation of Alcatraz with the Apollo 11 moon landing. Each story takes eight months or more to make. Co-founder Jackson Roach calls the project 'the work of my life,' reflecting the commitment to craft in an industry racing toward the quick and commercial.
