‘Sanctuary people’ redefine what it means to protect immigrants in uncertain times

As the deadline approaches, faith communities and nonprofits across Ohio have mobilized with prayer vigils, rallies, and fundraising efforts. The organizing reflects what advocates call 'sanctuary people' – going beyond offering physical protection to emphasize accompaniment, with volunteers coordinating housing assistance, job support, translation services, and daily support for families facing uncertainty. At a recent rally in Springfield, a community leader told residents, 'You have welcomed your neighbors, spoken out against injustice, defended vulnerable families, and refused to let hate and division have the final word.'
