Iran war has cost $37.5bn so far, Hegseth tells Senate – US politics live

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told senators that the war with Iran has cost thirty-seven point five billion dollars so far, and that the Pentagon needs another eighty-seven point six billion dollars to, in his department's words, sustain vital operations without disruption. The testimony opened with protesters being removed from the hearing room. The Guardian's world desk reports the conflict is also showing up at the pump: the American Automobile Association puts a gallon of gas at just over four dollars, almost a dollar more than a year ago, while Brent Crude, the international oil benchmark, is up nearly two percent to ninety dollars and ninety-two cents a barrel. The funding request now sits with the Senate.
