Hegseth tells Senate war on Iran has so far cost $37.5bn at hearing to request more funds

politics

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told the Senate appropriations committee on Tuesday that the U.S.-Israel war on Iran has cost thirty-seven point five billion dollars so far, higher than previous estimates. He appeared to defend the Trump administration's request for roughly eighty-eight billion dollars more, funding he called urgent and necessary. The Guardian's world desk reports his opening remarks were repeatedly interrupted by protesters, and that lawmakers were furious over both the climbing price tag and the deaths of three American service members last week. The supplemental request now rests with the committee.
