Appeals court reverses decision that released pro-Palestinian Columbia activist Mohsen Mahdawi

politics

The Guardian is reporting that a federal appeals court ruled on Tuesday, reversing an earlier judge's decision to release pro-Palestinian activist Mohsen Mahdawi, who organized student protests at Columbia. The Second Circuit court in New York found the Vermont federal judge had overstepped his authority by intervening before the immigration court could process the case. The reversal reopens the door to Mahdawi's arrest, as the Trump administration has pursued his deportation for more than a year. The Vermont judge had likened these deportation efforts to McCarthyist repression.
