Open Source Vacuum Avoids Cloud

tech

Open-source projects are pushing back against the subscription economy, and the latest front is your vacuum cleaner. The OOMWOO is a completely open-source robotic vacuum—hardware and software both—that requires zero cloud connection. Per Hackaday, it runs on a Raspberry Pi with ROS 2 software and a two-D lidar system that maps rooms just like commercial competitors. The project's still in progress; most software is complete but you'll need a three-D printer to build the parts. Volunteers are working on GitHub to adapt those designs for standard components. With the Roomba ecosystem facing its own challenges, open alternatives like this one are increasingly needed.
