House passes spending bill to head off government shutdown before midterms

politics

The Guardian reports that the House of Representatives passed a spending bill on Tuesday to avert a government shutdown, with funding authorized through December fourth. The vote was two hundred twenty to two hundred five, largely along party lines. Republican leaders pushed the measure to sidestep what they view as a politically divisive issue heading into November's midterm elections. The bill now goes to the Senate, where it will need bipartisan support to advance.
