OpenCircuitX: a free, open-source EDA platform for VHDL and Verilog

OpenCircuitX, a free, open-source EDA platform, has launched for hardware engineers and FPGA hobbyists. Per Adafruit Blog, it combines an HDL editor, circuit canvas, schematic viewer, waveform viewer, and full FPGA toolchain—typically scattered across expensive proprietary software. The platform targets FPGA design, not custom silicon, which its developers frame not as a limitation but as pragmatism: foundries only certify commercial tools for chip tapeouts, while open-source projects like IceStorm already produce real bitstreams for FPGAs. It currently runs on Windows, with Mac and Linux executables planned. The MIT-licensed project is available on GitHub.
