Nicaragua’s congress announces ‘work plan’ to suspend elections

Nicaragua's congress, controlled by longtime president Daniel Ortega, announced what it calls a 'work plan' to suspend the country's elections, according to The Guardian. Ortega, who has led the country since two thousand seven, previously ordered the move after a controversial constitutional change last year that made his wife, Rosario Murillo, a co-president alongside him. The UN and the US swiftly condemned the announcement, with the US Secretary of State calling on the international community to 'join forces' against what Washington describes as the authoritarian Ortega regime.
