Ever run an internet speed test and get a completely different result the next time? Hackaday explains why: internet speed isn't a single measurement—it's the performance of your specific device, over your connection, through your ISP, to a particular server, at a particular time. Change any variable and the answer changes. Ookla's Speedtest uses multiple simultaneous transfers to measure aggregate bandwidth—useful for busy households, but different from a single file download. Google's built-in test and M-Lab measure a single connection instead, which can expose latency issues that multiple streams hide. Netflix's Fast.com tests directly to Netflix servers—different route, potentially different result. Cloudflare reports even more detail, including bufferbloat: when a filled queue spikes your latency from twelve milliseconds to several hundred. Practically speaking, once your ISP service reaches several hundred megabits per second, WiFi becomes your real bottleneck. That router marketed as AC eighteen hundred? That's the combined capacity across multiple devices and bands, not what one device actually gets. For a proper test, connect directly to your router via Ethernet and see what you're really getting.
