Neuroscientists at the University of Otago have mapped the neural pathway that transforms a mother's brain. The pathway connects a hormone-sensing region of the brain to its reward center, becoming active when triggered by pregnancy hormones—placental lactogen and prolactin. This connection floods the brain with dopamine, the same chemical that makes experiences feel rewarding, making time with a newborn feel genuinely fulfilling rather than just necessary. As The Conversation Australia reports, researchers could even experimentally flip this drive on and off in mice, with non-mothers suddenly showing maternal behaviors when the pathway was activated. While the research used animals, humans share the same reward pathways. The discovery could help explain why between ten and eighteen percent of mothers struggle with bonding or mood during the peripartum period—a challenge that may reflect how the brain adapted, not a personal failing.
