Secret Service threat cases soar 40%

politics

Threats against the people the U.S. Secret Service protects have jumped about forty percent from a year ago, Axios reports. A spokesperson tells the outlet the agency has fielded roughly ten thousand threats so far this year, with the country only a little past the halfway mark, and says mental health interventions have risen tenfold over the same stretch. The surge is stretching the agency's resources as it prepares for Friday's rescheduled White House Correspondents' Dinner, the original of which was derailed when shots were fired at the D.C. building where President Trump was set to speak in April. A thirty-one-year-old California man now faces charges that include attempting to assassinate the president.
