From Mexico to Venezuela: A diaspora’s race to save lives

When powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela, help came from thousands of miles away. Global Voices reports that Venezuelans living abroad mobilized within hours, raising funds, organizing volunteers, and building networks to deliver aid directly to survivors. In Mexico, migrant and producer Mariana Álvarez Castillo helped spearhead a grassroots relief effort alongside the communities of La Pitahaya Vegana, Masala CCS, and Levantemos la Casa. She told Global Voices that living in a seismic country like Mexico taught them how critical the first hours after a disaster are, and within seven hours they had delivered supplies, meals, and clean drinking water to four public hospitals. Working with the Topos Azteca rescue brigade and a trusted network in Caracas, organizers say they routed donations straight to those in need, part of a diaspora turning grief into collective action.
