Industrial GPU Adapted for the Desktop

Hackaday reports on an interesting bit of hardware ingenuity: a maker repurposed a Tesla V100 GPU meant for server data centers into a home desktop accelerator. Using an adapter board to add PCIe connectivity, the main problem was the cooling fan—eighty-two decibels, loud as a lawnmower. After taming the noise, the builder paired it with an RTX forty-eighty to run a local large language model with thirty-two gigabytes of combined VRAM. The self-hosted model performs around Claude Sonnet level, all for around two hundred pounds.
