An opinion piece in The Conversation pushes back on the notion that domestic violence is a "two-way street," arguing the evidence shows it is gendered and often deadly. The author, a family violence professor, is responding to comments this week by One Nation leader Pauline Hanson, who called such violence wrong but, the piece says, made excuses for it. It cites Australia's Personal Safety Survey, noting one in four women have experienced violence by an intimate partner or family member since the age of fifteen, compared with one in eight men. The Conversation reports that, according to Australian Femicide Watch, thirty-seven women have been killed this year, following the killing of four women and girls in four days earlier this month.
