Without stronger government action, Brazil’s low deforestation in the Amazon is unlikely to last

Grist reports that Brazil's Amazon deforestation has hit its lowest level in a decade, a result of environmental policies the Lula administration ramped up after taking office in twenty twenty-three. But that progress is at risk. In January, major agrifood groups abandoned the Amazon Soy Moratorium—a voluntary agreement that had been highly effective at restricting soy-driven deforestation since two thousand eight. According to new research published in Science, one point four million hectares—about two million soccer fields—could be lost over the next ten years. Environmental researchers warn that without stronger government action and private sector commitments, this recent progress will likely reverse.
