Luiz Carlos Barreto, Its Legendary Film Producer, Dies at 98

Luiz Carlos Barreto, one of the driving forces behind Brazil's Cinema Novo movement of the nineteen sixties and seventies, has died in Rio de Janeiro at the age of ninety-eight. Variety reports that Barreto passed on Wednesday, July twenty-second, and that the scale of the tributes reflects the enormous regard in which he was held both in his native Brazil and abroad. Cinema Novo was the influential wave of socially conscious Brazilian filmmaking that brought the country's cinema to international attention.
