Teenage girl and woman die after group gets into difficulties in sea off Essex beach

Two people have died after a group of five got into difficulty in the sea off an Essex beach at West Mersea. The Guardian reports that a teenage girl and a woman in her forties were killed in the incident on Thursday. A third person remains in hospital in serious condition, while two others are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The five are believed to have known each other.
