AI Won’t Kill SaaS. But It Will Kill Vendors That Stopped Shipping. Point Solutions Are Most at Risk.

Per Jason Lemkin, founder of the SaaStr community, AI is reshaping the buy-versus-build equation for SaaS — but the real threat isn't to vendors broadly; it's to point solutions that have stopped shipping. His team recently replaced a newsletter-management tool they'd subscribed to for six years at roughly four thousand dollars annually, not for savings, but because the vendor hadn't shipped material updates in five-plus years. In two hours using Replit and Claude, they rebuilt it with AI-powered summaries and automated content feeds — specifically to save their Chief AI Officer ninety minutes per week. Lemkin warns that sophisticated customers are now quietly building weekend replacements for stagnant point solutions and disappearing at renewal — what he calls 'stealth churn.' Deep platforms with compliance complexity and integrations remain defensible. But single-purpose tools priced between two hundred and two thousand dollars monthly are increasingly expendable. His advice to vendors: ship constantly, embed AI structurally into your product, and build defensibility that no Saturday builder can replicate.
