In Scotland's Kingdom of Fife, Big Mary—the informal name for No. 2 Pit at Mary Colliery—stands eighty feet high, one of only two surviving reminders of the region's coal-mining past. Adjacent to the concrete structure, an outdoor exhibit displays the equipment that defined miners' lives: coal-cutters, hydraulic roof supports, mining carts, and the cage that lowered workers underground. A preserved steam locomotive, typical of those used in British collieries, remains on site. As Atlas Obscura tells it, a nearby noticeboard records known deaths and injuries from the pit's operation, documented from historic newspapers—a sobering record of mining's human toll. Big Mary stands as a monument to a vanished world of work.
