Atlas Obscura reports on the Gates of Heaven Synagogue in Madison, Wisconsin—a Romanesque Revival building erected in eighteen sixty-three by a small congregation of German-speaking Jewish families. The structure has served many purposes over the decades: sanctuary, dentist's office, funeral home, and government records warehouse during World War Two. When demolition threatened in nineteen seventy-one, the community made an extraordinary choice—they moved it. The full two-hundred-ton building rolled through the streets to its current home in James Madison Park. Designed by German immigrant architect August Kutzbock, the synagogue features distinctive rounded arches, a painted ceiling of blue and silver stars, and a prominent circular window. Today it serves as a popular venue for weddings and community gatherings—proof that determined communities can quite literally preserve history.
