Google hit with $1 billion in fines as EU braces for Trump battle

Google is facing more than one billion dollars in fines from the European Commission for violating the Digital Markets Act. Per Ars Technica, five hundred twenty-two million dollars is for self-preferencing—unfairly promoting its own services on Google Search—while four hundred eighty-eight million dollars targets anti-steering practices that restrict how app developers direct users to cheaper purchase options outside Google Play. This marks the third major tech company penalized under the DMA. Google has sixty days to restructure its practices, or face additional daily fines—specifically, it must treat third-party services fairly on Search and allow developers to freely promote offers outside its platform.
