‘It’s safe, and it won’t affect your device’: Russia’s pitch for its homegrown internet certificates

Meduza reports that Russian internet infrastructure is facing a growing problem. Global certificate authorities are revoking security credentials from Russian companies at scale—GlobalSign, a Japanese issuer, has revoked certificates affecting fifteen to twenty thousand domains. The result: Russians using foreign browsers like Chrome, Safari, and Edge can't access some Russian websites, banks, and online stores; they encounter connection errors or security warnings instead. Russia's Ministry of Digital Development is now urging users to install domestically produced SSL certificates to restore access, insisting the installation is safe and won't affect how devices function. The certificates are available through Gosuslugi, the state services portal, and Yandex Browser comes with them pre-installed.
