The two-hundred-thirty-dollar gadget sold out quickly, though it's far from the sophisticated device OpenAI has been promising. The company is developing a more ambitious portable device, with design input from Jony Ive, that features speakers and cameras but no screen, complete with moving parts designed to feel alive. The lawsuit exposes a deeper tension: AI companies have built their business on the idea that information should flow freely, but hardware makers protect their competitive advantage through manufacturing secrets, supplier relationships, and engineering knowledge that takes decades to accumulate. For OpenAI, escaping the software screen means running headlong into the hardware world's very different rules.
