Hundreds of Drone-as-First-Responder Programs Could Soon Be Launched Across the Country

Over one thousand public safety agencies have obtained FAA waivers to launch drone-as-first-responder programs, according to EFF Deeplinks. The expansion accelerated sharply after the FAA streamlined its approval process in April 2025—between then and February 2026, the agency issued more waivers than in the previous seven years combined. These autonomous drones operate beyond traditional line-of-sight restrictions, allowing single operators to control multiple devices and capture footage from areas ordinarily inaccessible to patrol officers, including backyards and rooftops. While police departments argue the technology improves situational awareness, deployment data suggests most calls are low-risk situations like mental health concerns rather than emergencies. As adoption spreads, privacy advocates stress the importance of transparent policies and community input before any program launch.
