Victoria paid for Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games. It’s not the state’s only recent sporting debacle

The twenty twenty-six Commonwealth Games started this week in Glasgow—with an awkward financial reality for Australia's Victoria state. Victoria had withdrawn from hosting the event in twenty twenty-three, projecting it would cost six billion Australian dollars. Yet Glasgow is delivering a ten-sport competition for roughly two hundred ninety million Australian dollars, a fraction of that estimate. The Conversation reports that Victorian taxpayers have already paid five hundred eighty-nine million dollars in sunk costs and legal settlements, including one hundred ninety-four million to Glasgow organizers. Notably, neither British nor Scottish governments are funding the event. The cancellation raises a sharper question about Australia's sporting landscape: whether Melbourne, long known for hosting major events, is ceding ground to other states now investing heavily in sports and entertainment. Victoria retains flagship events like the Australian Open and Formula One Grand Prix, but has surrendered the MotoGP to South Australia after three decades and been passed over for Women's World Cup and Rugby World Cup hosting—leaving its status as Australia's sporting capital increasingly uncertain.
