Does using a reusable cup make you less likely to protest climate change? We tracked 2,800 Australians to find out

science

Per The Conversation, a four-year study of nearly twenty-eight hundred Australians found that individual climate actions—using reusable cups, cycling to work, eating greener—don't undermine support for climate policies or collective action, contrary to concerns that personal responsibility might distract from systemic change. These behaviors also don't inspire activism; people who increased personal actions weren't more likely to protest or support stronger climate policies the following year. Instead, environmental choices reflect existing values. Individual and collective climate action work best as partners, not substitutes.
