As climate lawsuits advance, the oil industry enters ‘panic mode’

The oil industry is entering what one climate advocate calls "panic mode" as wrongful-death and liability lawsuits advance, Grist reports. At the center is a Washington state case brought by Misti Leon, whose mother died of overheating during the record heat dome that pushed temperatures to one hundred eight degrees Fahrenheit in June twenty twenty-one — a stretch scientists estimate killed roughly twelve hundred people across the Pacific Northwest. Leon accuses Exxon Mobil, BP, Chevron, Shell and other majors of knowing for decades that emissions would cause harm while deceiving the public, and a King County judge recently let the suit proceed toward trial. Grist says nearly forty such cases are now pending nationwide, even as the industry, backed by the Trump administration and Republican lawmakers, pushes liability-shield laws and challenges the science linking emissions to extreme weather. The Supreme Court is set to weigh a related case from Boulder, Colorado, this fall, an outcome that could reshape climate litigation across the country.
