Spain declares wildfire emergency, 10,000 evacuated near Madrid

Spain has declared a national emergency after a series of wildfires broke out late on Thursday in the Madrid region and the nearby province of Avila. France 24 reports the measure is meant to speed up the deployment of firefighting resources, with some ten thousand people already forced to evacuate. Spanish authorities acknowledged that, in their words, not enough has been done to contain and prevent the blazes, which they say are no longer a temporary emergency.
