First Thing: Trump imposes fresh tariffs on UK, EU and dozens of other trading partners

Donald Trump has announced fresh tariffs on more than eighty countries, replacing a ten percent global duty set to expire. The Guardian reports the tariffs were announced by US trade representative Jamieson Greer and are justified under Section 301 of the Trade Act of nineteen seventy-four—a provision targeting forced labor. This comes after a February Supreme Court decision that ruled many of Trump's earlier tariffs illegal. Affected countries have reacted with bewilderment, with some arguing their labor laws are actually stronger than those in the United States.
