Access to finance ‘strengthens climate resilience’ among sub-Saharan women

Carbon Brief reports on new research showing that women in sub-Saharan Africa with access to formal financial services—such as bank accounts—are significantly better able to withstand climate shocks. The study examined over twenty-five thousand women-headed households across thirty-seven countries and found that financial inclusion enables women to save money, access emergency credit, and invest in climate-adaptive practices. However, the study's authors note that financial access alone isn't sufficient for long-term resilience. Lasting protection against climate change requires broader structural change to address gender inequality, including policies like subsidized insurance for women farmers and quotas for women in local climate-adaptation committees.
