Drones have created a new energy security landscape

Drones are fundamentally reshaping energy security. Axios reports that conflicts in Ukraine and Iran show how cheap, unmanned aircraft can strike expensive energy infrastructure — refineries, oil tankers, liquefied natural gas terminals. Ukraine has launched drone strikes on Russian refineries from great distances; Iran has used drones to disrupt shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The disruptions have rippled into global markets: oil traded at one hundred dollars a barrel this week, driving up gas and diesel costs worldwide. The response is a strategic shift away from centralized, massive power systems toward smaller, modular networks — cheaper to build, faster to deploy, and harder to cripple in a single strike. Ukraine is already using mobile, on-site power sources to replace grid systems damaged by drone attacks. As energy experts note, decades of assuming bigger is better — economy of scale, concentrated infrastructure — no longer holds when the size of your facility determines the scale of damage a cheap drone can inflict.
